Events

In this section we keep track of past and future events of the LEOSWEEP Project, as well as activities of the Partners related to the project or its dissemination.

2015-05-21    Ukrainian-European seminar (extended round-table) on active space debris removal

The Ukrainian-European seminar (extended round-table) on active space debris removal took place in the Palace of students of the Dnipropetrovsk National University from 20 to 21 May, 2015. The seminar was the part of the 5th International Conference "Space Technologies: Present and Future", which was organized by enterprises and organizations of Ukrainian space industry, including the National Space Agency of Ukraine, Yuzhnoye State Design Office, SE PA Yuzhny Machine Building Plant. More than 300 experts from 20 countries took part in the conference this year. Professor Anatoly Alpatov, the head of department of the Institute of Technical Mechanics of NASU and SSAU, made a presentation on space debris problem at the plenary session of the conference.

Fourteen presentations on various subjects from legal issues of international cooperation to technical solutions of space debris problems were made during the seminar, which was held under the chairmanship of the Ukrainian team leader Professor Anatoly Alpatov and the principal investigator of the project Dr. Claudio Bombardelli.

Various concepts for space debris removal were discussed, including using active, passive, contact, and contactless approaches. The main attention was paid to the challenges of the Ion beam Shepherd concept, including modeling and calculation of the ion beam impact, modeling of space debris dynamics, analysis of orbital dynamics of the system "Shepherd - space debris object," reducing propellant consumption for Shepherd control". The seminar presentations and discussions were attended by over 50 participants.

A special session of Ukrainian-European seminar was organized on the site of the testing facilities of ITM of NASU and SSAU on May 21, 2015. During this session C. Bombardelli and the head of the department of ionized media mechanics of ITM of NASU and SSAU Professor V. Shuvalov discussed goals of the project in terms of modeling of interaction of the ion beam with the materials of space targets. The list of materials, mechanisms of interaction of an ion beam with space debris, which lead to erosion and destruction of the target surface, were defined and the terms and objectives of the project which are to be solved using ITM plasmodynamic bench were specified.
